The path to NU, short for -NEW UNIVERSE- and meaning NOW in Jurjus and Mellema’s original language, Dutch, has seen many wanderings, off-road travel, and endless miles of highway. Along the way, unwritten rules and formalities went out the window. All the music Barry and Ties have ever played and created, in the streets or in the concert halls, comes together on NEW UNIVERSE. NU transcends pigeon-holes and is far greater than the sum of its parts. Music from various backgrounds moves to the forefront, generating an entire universe of inspiration.

On NU, different genres merge and enhance and complement each other. You hear a Latin bass fit perfectly under a Reichian motif, with a weightless romantic melody above it (LLKKRR); a funky groove, with expressive melodies sounding over it, being absorbed in a big band (SCHIJF VAN VIJF). Funk coexists perfectly with drone music (GEK GENOEG); an African beat emerges from a web of minimal patterns, and dissolves into a gospel-like apotheosis (SPIVA); and when deep basses and sumptuous pad sounds are added, two classical compositions (Façades and Spiegel im Spiegel) are placed firmly in the NOW.

NEW UNIVERSE invites subculture aficionados, including jazz, classical, dance, Latin American, and African music lovers to identify with the music and explore newfound elements. PEAX doesn’t dictate; they show you the options.

NU represents the era in which we live, where everything is possible and permissible, and where every kind of music possible is available at a single click. NU moves, and at times consists of up to a hundred different layers, each of which must find a fixed or variable place where they can be discerned.
